The Secret Garden (Book and Progeny Press Study Guide)

We used a lot of Progeny Press study guides over the years, and I was never disappointed with them. They helped my kids dig deeper into the books they were reading, and all I had to do was go over the answers with them.

This particular set of text and study guide for The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is in very good condition and ideal for grades 6-8. Sorry, this set is sold.

The Complete Lyric Language Spanish

Ah, good intentions....I meant to use this with my younger daughter, but she wanted to learn French instead, so we never used this. It's a book and a CD for teaching young kids Spanish using bilingual songs.

It retails for $14.95 but I paid $10.75 when I bought it from Rainbow Resource.

The book is 24 pages and the CD is 70 minutes. Sorry....this one's sold.

Step By Step (Grade 8) Hardbound Text and Workbook Key

Pathway Publishing has to be one of my favorite homeschool publishers, yet their products were not written for the homeschool market. They're used by Amish and Mennonite schools. But even tv-watching people like me can appreciate quality.

I've used so many of their products since I began homeschooling. This particular text is their eighth-grade literature program, and I'm pairing it with the teacher's edition of the workbook that goes with it. Along with a new copy of the workbook, this set would make an economical and high-quality part of your curriculum.

The book is hardbound, 416 pages, printed in 1991 and in very good condition. The teacher key is paperback, 80 pages, printed in 2000 and in very good condition. Sorry....this one's sold.

Simple Science Experiments

I actually remember where I bought this book. I ordered it at a Discovery Toys party probably 20 years ago. How sad is that? I remember where I ordered this book but not what I had for dinner last night. Sigh. "When Baby Boomers start losing their memories. Next time on 'Oprah!'"

Anyway, this book is a reprint of a popular German science book for children, and it's very nice. I used it a few times with the kids when they were small, but I must not have let them touch it, because it's in excellent condition.

It's hardcover, no print date, and no page count, but there are 204 experiments. Sorry....this one's sold.

The Thomas Edison Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments

Unlike the previous book I posted, this one may be easy and incredible, but it was a bit over my head in spots, which explains why it doesn't have any....we never used it!

If I haven't used it with the first three kids, I doubt if I'll use it with #4, so it's time to send it to someone who has a child who's into science and will probably burn through this book (not literally, I hope!)

This book is softcover, printed in 1988, 146 pages and in like-new condition. Sorry...this one's sold.

Reader's Digest How Science Works: 100 Ways Parents and Kids Can Share the Secrets of Science

Are you one of those science moms? The kind that love science and know a lot about it and buy all sorts of cool scientific stuff for your kids that the rest of us can't even identify? If so, this isn't the book for you. You probably know everything in it already.

But for the rest of us, this book is a gem. It has explanations that make sense to non-science types. It's packed with experiments that not only spell out every step, but include lots of photos. They should call it "Science for Parents Who Prefer Literature."

This book is hardcover with a dust cover in great shape, printed in 1991, 192 pages, and in excellent condition. Sorry....this one's sold.

Marlin Perkins' Zooparade

This collectible book was written by Marlin Perkins, host of "Wild Kingdom," a popular television show of the 1960s. Before Perkins gained national fame, he had a television show about animals that was popular among Chicagoans in the 1950s. It was filmed at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

I bought this book because it has such wonderful and lavishly illustrated stories about animals. It's great for reading aloud or for independent reading. It would also make an awesome keepsake for someone who grew up in Chicago in the 50s or 60s.

This book is library-bound hardcover, 96 pages, printed in 1954 and in good-to-acceptable condition. Sorry....this one's sold.

Kid Biz

I'm all about encouraging entrepreneurship in our kids, especially considering the precarious condition of our economy these days. It certainly can't hurt to have more than one source of income!

Kid Biz starts with separate introductions for parents and kids, explains how to set up a business and get customers, and how to handle the money earned. Then it jumps right in to over 100 small business ideas for kids, organized by season.

Scattered throughout the book are forms and worksheets to keep kids on track. The book presents the idea of earning money on your own as fun as well as profitable.

This book is softcover, 184 pages, printed in 1990 and in great shape. Sorry.....this one's sold.

What's A Smart Woman Like You Doing At Home?

Once upon a time there was a wonderful magazine for stay-at-home moms called Welcome Home. I read that magazine long after I first became a mom because I found it so realistically encouraging.

The founders of that magazine wrote this book to encourage the mom "who has decided to put her family first without putting herself last."

This book is written for all moms, not just homeschooling moms, and would be especially appropriate for a mom who's having a hard time justifying her decision to others.

This book is softcover, 192 pages, printed in 1986, and is in very good condition. Sorry, this one's sold.

101 More Devotions for Homeschool Moms

I had the pleasure of hearing Jackie Wellwood speak to a large homeschool support group some years back, and she was so down-to-earth yet spiritual that I just had to have one of her books.

That said, I never got around to reading the whole book. I skimmed it a few times, and I see from a post-it note stuck to one page that I used it for a devotional with a group of parents of homeschooled teens. But other than that (and my name and old address stamped inside the front cover), it's pristine.

I'd keep it if I thought I would get around to reading it, but I have a large stack of books I want to get around to reading next to my chair in the living room, and they're collecting dust. So I will have to part with this lovely book.

It's softcover, printed in 2002, 224 pages and, like I said, in like-new condition. Sorry.....this one's sold.

No Regrets: How Homeschooling Earned Me A Master's Degree At Age 16

This book made quite a stir in homeschooling circles when it was published in 1989. Alexandra Swann and her nine siblings were not only homeschooled, but homeschooled in an accelerated manner so that they finished high school and college at very young ages, hence the subtitle of this book.

This book is not for everyone (unschoolers take note). But if you're curious to learn how to educate your child so that he or she can earn an advanced degree at age 16, you'll enjoy this. The author is very straightforward with her opinions about homeschooling, and her love for her family. She also goes into a lot of detail about how exactly they progressed through homeschooling.

This book is in excellent condition, softcover, printed in 1989, 141 pages. Sorry....this one's sold.

Our Reeds Grow Free: Homeschooling Adventure by Karl Reed

These days, it's not hard to find books written by homeschooling parents describing how they homeschooled their children to adulthood (I even wrote one!)

But back when I began homeschooling, in the 1980s and early 1990s, such information was hard to come by and treasured when I could find it.

That's why this book was encouraging for me, and a great find. The Reed family began homeschooling their nine children in 1973, so this is a story of homeschooling pioneers. This updated version (1991) mentions their 26 grandchildren. I imagine by now they have quite a few more!

This book is softcover, 155 pages, in great shape except for a little price sticker remaining on the cover, and printed in 1991. Sorry....this one's sold.

Literature of the American People, Classics for Christians, Vol. 4

Of the four high school level Lit books from A Beka that I've used with my three older kids, this book is probably their favorite.
Not that they loved any of them, because they all preferred individual books over textbooks. But this one includes some great poetry, as well as excerpts of the works of Twain, Thoreau, and Sandburg (among many others), and even a surprise appearance by Elisabeth Elliot, one of my favorite writers. Beautiful art reproductions and photography make it especially attractive inside.
This is the student textbook, not the teacher's edition. It's softbound, 434 pages, printed in 1997 and in good shape (no writing inside). Sorry....this one's sold.

Welcome!

I've been homeschooling my children for over twenty years now, which means we have accumulated hundreds of books! I need to thin out our library, which is really tough because we have loved so many books over the years. But now that two of our kids are grown and on their own, we've downsized to a smaller house, and simply no longer have the shelf space for so many books!

One of my projects this summer is to post all the books I have for sale on this blog. Since our homeschool publishing business keeps us pretty busy, I anticipate posting only a few books at a time, as time permits. So you might want to subscribe to this blog via a feeder or by email if you'd like a heads-up each time a new book is posted here.

Thanks for stopping by!
